About The old centre: Al Dirah and Murabba

The old centre of Riyadh, Al Dirah, is where the mud-brick town stood. The Masmak, a fort of 1865, is now a museum; around it the souqs sell gold, oud, textiles and, in Souq Al Zal, antiques and carpets. A short drive north, the King Abdulaziz Historical Center sets the National Museum and Murabba Palace in gardens, with Salam Park nearby.

Shopping

The souqs of Al Dirah and Souq Al Zal.

Start early at the Masmak and finish in the souqs after afternoon prayers.

Practical

Dress modestly, and expect shops to close briefly at prayer times.

Our advice: come back to Souq Al Zal in the evening, when the antique sellers lay out their stock.
