AlUla, in the north-west of the Kingdom, is a valley of sandstone outcrops, oasis gardens and an old mud-brick town. Beside it, Hegra (Al-Hijr), with its monumental Nabataean tombs cut into the rock, became Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. It is a flight from Riyadh; book sites and experiences on the official AlUla channels.

Give it two nights: one day for Hegra, one for the valleys.
Getting there

Our advice: book Hegra in advance; visits are by timed tour.
